Weight-loss drugs usually considered in person who have no contraindications and have one of the following :

* body mass index (BMI) is greater than 30
* BMI is greater than 27 and you have a severe medical problem related to obesity, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Common weight-loss drugs

  • Orlistat(Xenical) ,Approved by the FDA . It decreases absorption of dietary fat.
  • The main side effects of Xenical are cramping, diarrhea, flatulence, intestinal discomfort, and leakage of oily stool.
  • Alli is the reduced-strength version of orlistat (Xenical).
  • It works with the same mechanism of Orlistat by decreasing absorption of fat by the intestines.
  • Alli is taken with fat-containing meals, up to three times a day.
  • It’s recommended that you eat no more than 15 grams of fat with each meal.
  • Eating higher amounts of fat can cause unwanted effects, such as urgent bowel movements, diarrhea and gas with oily spotting.
  • If you are on Alli contact your doctor if you experience signs and symptoms, such as weakness or fatigue, fever, jaundice, or brown urine, which could indicate liver injury.
  • The FDA still is reviewing the safety of orlistat and Alli because of reports of serious liver injury in people taking them.
  • Sibutramine(Meridia),approved by the FDA .Increases the levels of certain brain chemicals that help reduce appetite.
  • Common side effects of Meridia include headache, dry mouth, constipation ,insomnia ,increased blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Meridia should not be used by people with high blood pressure, a history of heart disease, congestive heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or stroke.
  • Other anti-obesity prescription drugs include: Desoxyn (methamphetamine) ,Bontril (phendimetrazine tartrate), Ionamin and Adipex-P (phentermine).
  • They are “speed”-like drugs that should not be used by people with high blood pressure, heart disease, an overactive thyroid gland, or glaucoma.
  • They don’t cause weight loss beyond several weeks, and they have significant potential for physical dependence or addiction.

Finally, Medications used to decrease weight are potentially unsafe products ,

adding more risks on your body and not lighten anything but your wallet.

It’s important to do a good research if you’re thinking about trying weight-loss pills.
